Quiksilver one of the most famous names in surf wear

Quiksilver was founded in the early 1970s by an Australian surf enthusiast called Alan Green. It was inspired, it’s said, by a Japanese woodcut called the Great Wave Off Kanagawa, which was published in 1832 and showed a great wave threatening sailing boats off the coast of Kanagawa. It shows Mount Fuji in the background.

This nineteenth century Japanese image might seem to be a million miles away from the world of Australian, Californian or south west English surfing but it does have one thing in common, of course, and that’s a wave. It is even displayed in the occasional surf shop, especially those stocking Quiksilver amongst their surf wear.

Quiksilver also producing a collection of surf wear for women called Roxy. In 2005, the company launched The Quiksilver Foundation, a charitable organisation which works to provide environmental, educational, health and youth-related projects to board riding communities around the world.

Surf wear from Quiksilver is now very popular not just on beaches and at surfing events but also on the street and at parties as young people look not just for something to wear for surfing but also for when they are relaxing. The company produces hats and caps as well as hoodies and fleeces with a surfing theme. Their T-shirts have surf logos and themes as well and the company even produces accessories such as wallets and belts that manage to be both funky and useful.

The company also sponsors around 500 amateur and professional surfers and skateboarders including professional surfer Kelly Slater. This kind of sponsorship has Quiksilver as a surf wear brand maintain its close connection with the sport and it has of course helped Slater himself to become very a great name have been crowned ASP World Champion.
