Used Surfboard Shopping – Finding the Right One is Important

Whenever you head out to purchase a new surfboard it’s going to be an investment. These are definitely not cheap, and some surfers don’t have the money to buy top of the line items. The good news is there are plenty of opportunities available when you look for a used surfboard. You can find these locally or even online through auction websites. Unfortunately though, if you don’t find the right one you could end up wasting your money.

 

You have to consider a few things before purchasing a used surfboard. Those who are able to take the necessary precautions in the beginning will feel much better with their purchase in the end. One of the first things you have to do is look for dings on the surfboard. You should figure out whether or not all the dings have been repaired, and try to figure out if there are soft spots.

 

Soft spots are issues that start from the foam rotting. It happens because of water seeping into the board and if you find them, start looking elsewhere for another used surfboard. Another benefit is if you know how many dings have been repaired because it means the board is too lightly glassed.

 

If by chance you find a repair down the length of the board it means it has been cracked. It’s possible that if you purchase this used surfboard it will crack again, except this time you will be riding it. You definitely don’t want it to happen to you.

 

It’s also possible that the board is discolored. Even though it’s not the coolest looking board, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to ride it. What it comes down to is this is more cosmetic so it won’t actually hurt the overall performance.

 

Checking the fins will be important as well. If there are cracks around the base then the fins are glassed on and this alone is expensive to fix. Consider checking the boxes too, because there could be cracks, water seepage, or even stripped shrub screws. These boxes are pricey, and if you want to alleviate the situation all together then don’t by a used surfboard with these problems.

 

There is wear and tear that is going to occur, but if you repair them early on it won’t be a big deal. You should also understand that a used surfboard is going to lose its flex characteristics over time. It’s not a huge issue and it won’t make a big difference.

 

What it comes down to is you have to do your research. Take the time to look for individuals who aren’t happy with their board and want to get rid of it quick. In most cases these are newer surfboards and they want to sell them in a hurry. Why? Well, they want to get another surfboard, and it could end up being your long lost surfing treasure.

 

The best way to find a used surfboard that is perfect for you is by shopping around. However, we do not recommend purchasing one online, because you won’t be able to look it over first. Just go down to your local shop and see if they have a used surfboard or even beginner surfboards for you.
